Project 1: Collages

Part 1- Physical Collage

Collect pictures from newspapers, magazines, printouts, or any physical materials to compose a physical collage that strongly showcases your idea.

1) 3 Pre-compositions
I decided to use pieces that attracted me from newspapers and magazines: words and images that give positive vibes.

This collage's idea is similar to the previous one, but I used different images and arranged them to portrait as suggested.

I stumbled upon the infamous actress Angelina Jolie and decided to use the printout. I added the moon to create a mysterious atmosphere and used newspaper pieces to remake her dress.

2) Final Composition

I chose the third collage as the lecturer prefers a more aesthetic one and uses different positive words to make the dresses. I also added some flower petals on the moon and around her, as the flower represents 'beauty.' One of the petals covered her mouth because of the societal norm of believing that 'pretty women do not have brains and shouldn't talk too much.'

Part 2- Digital Imaging

Exercise 1: Me in Hearst Mansion (Adjustments and Filters)

Exercise 2: Recolouring

Production Process

The above picture is the reference used for coloring. In Photoshop, use the Eyedropper tool to pick up the colors and select the layers separately (hair, eyes, lips, shirt, background) to fill in the color with the Brush tool. Lastly, use Blend Modes (Soft Light/Overlay) to ensure the colors to fit.

Final Outcome

Feedback

The lecturer said that the physical collage should be more aesthetic, and Pre-compos 1 & 2 are too straightforward and need artistic elements.

Reflection

As I am not a design student, though I am here to learn some aesthetic and artistic skills, the tasks are quite challenging to me. I am used to expressing my feelings and writing in a clear and precise manner. I have received useful feedback from the lecturer about my art style and tried my best to follow the steps to improve my skills. Overall, it is a fun learning journey.
